Experiences of Fathers of Children with Neurodiversity – Raising our own children
African fatherhood lost its lustre under the shadows of paternalism. Fathers are ordained to nurture, guide and provide for their children. These ordained roles of fatherhood contrast with paternalistic control, torture, abuse and harassment some children are forced to endure. Neurodivergent children sometimes suffer stigma and discrimination from societies, and most painfully from cultural practices, religions, government policies and families lack of acceptance and support. Some fathers abandon their families once they learn of a neurodivergent child they fathered. In some instances, mothers also abandon their children and families, leaving fathers to raise the children alone. Fathers of Children with Neurodiversity (FCN) Tribe was formed in 2024 with a vision that advocates for: A world where neurodiverse communities are integrated, seen and heard.
